Object Management Group Issues New Core IIoT Connectivity Gateway RFP and Three RFCs at Q1 Members Meeting
RFP extends reach of Data-Distribution Service to bridge disparate communications protocols across IIoT
Needham, MA – April 24, 2018 – The Object Management Group® (OMG®), an international, open membership, not-for-profit technology standards consortium issued a new Request for Proposal for DDS Consolidated JSON Syntax (DDS-JSON)and three new Requests for Comments (RFCs) at its quarterly Technical Meeting, which was held from March 19-23, 2018 in Reston, Virginia. he meeting was sponsored by No Magic, RTI and Sparx Systems.
DDS Consolidated JSON Syntax RFP
Because the OMG Data-Distribution Service™ (DDS™) specification is deployed in a large number of complex mission-critical systems, such as industrial control systems including transportation, medical devices, smart grids, healthcare, smart cities and aerospace, it requires the integration of different connectivity frameworks. Key to DDS is the specification of gateways that bridge disparate communication protocols. The goal of the OMG DDS-JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) RFP is to draft a specification using the lightweight, text-based, platform-independent JSON data interchange format to represent DDS-related resources such as DDS Quality of Service (QoS), DDS Data Types, and DDS Entities (DomainParticipants, Topics, Publishers, Subscriber, DataWriters and DataReaders).
Letters of Intent to submit are due by September 7, 2018, and submissions are due by November 12, 2018.
First Reading RFCs
- Point of Service (WS-POS) 1.3.1 RFC provides retail devices, POS terminals and servers with the capabilities to interoperate in a detached, dynamic network, as well as in more typical local area networks (LANs). WS-POS enables POS devices such as printers, scales and scanners to be connected to multiple transaction touch points such as POS terminals, mobile devices, and virtual POS terminals anywhere in the store or enterprise. With WS-POS, retailers can reduce their expenses by sharing POS device peripherals like printers and scanners across multiple POS terminals. The RFC public comment deadline is May 21, 2018.
- Mission Control Message Specification RFC is intended to establish common format specifications to allow for common data exchange interfaces to integrate satellite mission ground data system products from multiple vendors and system developers. The RFC public comment deadline is May 21, 2018.
- UML® Profile for ROSETTA (UPR) RFC adds an extension to UML® to enable the use of parameterized design patterns in support of constraint-driven design for architecture optimization and system design. The RFC public comment deadline is May 21, 2018.
The following RFC submissions were reviewed a second time by the Architecture Board and are currently under Technical Committee adoption vote:
- Tools Output Integration Framework™ (TOIF™) RFC provides a standards-based environment that integrates the outputs of multiple static analysis tools in a single uniform view of vulnerability information. Cyber security professionals, responsible for managing risks of software intensive systems, will find that TOIF-enabled static analysis tools and other TOIF-enabled tools provide enhanced vulnerability detection capability that builds upon both commercial and open source tools.
- UnifiedPOS Version 1.14.2 RFC is a widely accepted architectural specification for application interfaces to point-of-service devices that are used in retail and other vertical environments. It defines the structure of application interfaces to retail devices such as scanners, printers and scales, and describes the range of functionality in these devices that would typically be needed for POS software solutions.
- ARTS XML Video Analytics RFC enables multi-vendor interoperability for advanced analytics like facial recognition, people/demographic counting, and hazard identification. The communication standard enables technologies to capture and analyze video, and share the results with other systems. Examples include; software that recommends specific offers to shoppers who are recognized to be enrolled in a retailer's loyalty program, or an alert sent to a clerk if there is a problem in an aisle.
