Object Management Group Issues Request for Comments for Retail Point-of-Sale Hardware and ARTS XML Video Analytics Specifications
Next-generation specifications for integration of point-of-sale devices and retail event behaviors

Needham, MA – January 29, 2018 – The Object Management Group® (OMG®), an international, open membership, not-for-profit technology standards consortium, has issued the UnifiedPOS Version 1.14.2 RFC and the ARTS XML Video Analytics RFC for comments. The comment period will end February 19, 2018 at 5PM EST.

The UnifiedPOS specification provides retailers with the freedom to choose best-of-breed components for point-of-sale hardware to add business functionality without replacing POS systems and platforms in their entirety. UnifiedPOS is a widely accepted architectural specification for application interfaces to point-of-service devices that are used in retail and other vertical environments. It defines the structure of application interfaces to retail devices such as scanners, printers and scales, and describes the range of functionality in these devices that would typically be needed for POS software solutions.

The ARTS XML Video Analytics RFC enables multi-vendor interoperability for advanced analytics like facial recognition, people/demographic counting, and hazard identification. The communication standard enables technologies to capture and analyze video, and share the results with other systems. Video surveillance has traditionally been used in retail for loss prevention but is expanding to include other areas like loyalty programs and shopper incentives. Today, there are a number of video analytic products that identify behaviors, events, and trends captured on video. The ARTS XML Video Analytics will provide retailers with a standard to integrate events detected by multiple video analytic products and access the analytic results that describe the different behaviors.

Both OMG members and non-members are invited to comment using the RFC comment form located at https://www.omg.org/technology/rfc-form.htm.
